Mandatory e-registration at Abu Dhabi airport

Abu Dhabi international airport has now made e-registration of passport mandatory for all travelers through the airport according to several news reports. It is part of the new “Smart Travel System’ a solution implemented by the airport to automate and shorten the duration spent at various points in the airport including check-in, baggage drop, passport control and self boarding. It is claimed that the new system reduces time spent at passport control by up to 70%. There are 25 E-registration stands, 58 E-gates, and 76 Self boarding gates located in Terminals 1 and 3.

Registration involves scanning your passport as well as your retina. It is not clear if other body features are also taken in to account. I am not sure if making it mandatory is a good idea, surely not all travelers would be happy to give away their biometrics for e-registration. Also just moving everyone from the passport control hall to the e-gates would probably just overwhelm the e-gates.
