The National is reporting that Dubai International Airport is banning all irregular shaped luggage from March 8, 2018 onwards. So unless your luggage has a flat surface on which it can lie, it will not be allowed. The reasoning behind the decision is that Dubai International’s baggage systems have been jammed a number of time by such type of luggage which causes delays in delivery of bags.
The National reports that Dubai Airport is trying to increase passenger awareness to this regard by updating their website, mobile apps etc. However I found that the baggage regulations used to say – “Baggage larger than 90cm long, 75cm high and 60cm wide, or that does not have a single flat surface, will need to be checked in at the oversized baggage counter.”, that is they already had regulation on having a flat surface. As such, nothing has changed. On the waybackmachine you can see the exact same rule was applicable earlier as well.
While this is not going to be an issue for most of the passengers, there are lot of labour passengers who pack things in a bedsheet or similar piece of cloth held together by ropes. I have seen these types of luggage almost on all my trips through Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other airports in the region.
